This piece was done for an assignment in School of Motion's Illustration for Motion course. The brief was to create an illustration to accompany an editorial piece about how binge-watching can disrupt your life and create unhealthy habits.
A print illustration had already been done by another artist. The client wanted to keep the concept, but switch up the style to appeal to a younger audience of around 13-24 who would see it at 9:16 on Snapchat or Instagram TV instead.
I started by thinking about the visual language of the original piece and what things characterized it as more mature - dramatic lighting, fine texture, thin lines, and the use of asymmetry and negative space. I also looked at what aspects I wanted to keep, such a the sense of isolation, tension of being on the edge, and the palette used.
To fit with the younger demographic, I chose a laptop instead of a TV remote, added a reference to streaming autoplay, used a desk to imply studying, and applied a cartoon-y style with block colours, thick outlines, and exaggerated perspective.
